heard me read and which had made an impression upon him.<br />

One morn<strong>in</strong>g, for <strong>in</strong>stance, he was struck by the name Verc<strong>in</strong>getorige.<br />

That even<strong>in</strong>g, on enter<strong>in</strong>g the house, I found<br />

Verc<strong>in</strong>gctorige written on the marg<strong>in</strong>s of the newspapers, on<br />

the backs of my proofs, on the b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of the books, on the<br />

envelopes of letters, on the paper <strong>in</strong> the waste-basket, every<br />

where that he found space enough for the fourteen letters so<br />

dear to his heart.<br />

Another time the word ostrogoth appealed<br />

to him, and the day after my house was <strong>in</strong>vaded by ostrogoths.<br />

One day the word rh<strong>in</strong>oceros fasc<strong>in</strong>ated him, and the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g my house was filled with rh<strong>in</strong>oceroses. I ga<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />

however, on another side, and it was <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g able to abandon<br />

the use of crosses made with various colored pencils on the<br />

letters which he had to carry to certa<strong>in</strong> persons, because it<br />

was useless to<br />

try and make him remember names, <strong>in</strong>stead of<br />

which he would say<br />

: "This letter is<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g to the blue lady<br />

(demi-monde), this to the black journalist (who was red), and<br />

this to the yellow employes (who was al verde, mean<strong>in</strong>g short of<br />

funds).<br />

But while speak<strong>in</strong>g of his writ<strong>in</strong>g, I <strong>di</strong>scovered someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more curious than any th<strong>in</strong>g I have yet cited. He had purchased<br />

a copy-book, <strong>in</strong> which he made extracts from all the<br />

books that came <strong>in</strong>to his hand, the de<strong>di</strong>cation of authors to<br />

their parents, always tak<strong>in</strong>g care to substitute for<br />

the latter the<br />

name of his father, mother, or brother, to whom he fancied he<br />

was thus giv<strong>in</strong>g a splen<strong>di</strong>d token of his affection and gratitude.<br />
