the elder Lo Schiavo, was courageous enough to go to the w<strong>in</strong>dow,<br />

and from there, with clasped hands, weep<strong>in</strong>g and sobb<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> a heart-break<strong>in</strong>g way, beg the crowd to spare<br />

at least the<br />

women and children. He was answered that they would all<br />

be torn to bits. The poor father, <strong>in</strong> a fit of desperation,<br />

fired <strong>in</strong>to the street. This was the signal for assault. The<br />

multitude, utter<strong>in</strong>g a loud cry of fury, dashed with axes aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

the doors and began to launch a shower of balls and stones<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st the w<strong>in</strong>dows. The sol<strong>di</strong>ers defended themselves from<br />

with<strong>in</strong> by shots. The struggle<br />

lasted more than an hour.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, see<strong>in</strong>g that all their efforts were <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong>, the people set<br />

fire to the barracks. A horrible scene followed. The flames,<br />

which were already envelop<strong>in</strong>g the entire build<strong>in</strong>g, and the<br />

walls beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to crack, played through the rooms ;<br />

the air was<br />

burn<strong>in</strong>g, and the beams of the roof burst<strong>in</strong>g ;<br />

from outside<br />

came hisses and shouts of joy, <strong>in</strong>side were heard the despair<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cries of women and children ;<br />

seven sol<strong>di</strong>ers and Lo Schiavo<br />

lay stretched <strong>in</strong> their blood. Reduced to this extremity, the<br />

corporal, Albani, decided to attempt the only means of escape<br />

that rema<strong>in</strong>ed ;<br />

he gathered the three families <strong>in</strong>to one group ;<br />

ordered his few sol<strong>di</strong>ers to take the wounded on their shoulders<br />

;<br />

then he, and the others after him, hastily opened a door,<br />

and, with lowered bayonets, dashed head downward <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

crowd. The latter, astonished at such <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>di</strong>ble audacity,<br />

gave way but<br />

; hardly had they passed, when the mob fired and<br />

killed several members of the unfortunate family ;<br />

the others<br />

saved themselves, partly <strong>in</strong> the houses, partly <strong>in</strong> the country ;<br />

the sol<strong>di</strong>ers were not overtaken. Two days after this three<br />

companies of <strong>in</strong>fantry from Gerace, Monteleone, and Reggio<br />

arrived <strong>in</strong> Ardore and restored quiet. Capta<strong>in</strong> Onesti, of the
