3 84 MILITAR Y LIFE.<br />

times they succeeded, at others they were attacked, beaten,<br />

and then they returned on a run to<br />

the barracks, armed themselves,<br />

came out aga<strong>in</strong> ;<br />

the rioters shut themselves up <strong>in</strong> their<br />

houses, and fired from their w<strong>in</strong>dows, so that they were obliged<br />

to break down the doors, penetrate <strong>in</strong>to the houses, and attack<br />

them regularly. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the daytime<br />

there were cont<strong>in</strong>ual<br />

fatigue at ; night short and <strong>in</strong>terrupted slumbers and<br />

; danger<br />

and anxiety always.<br />

Besides this, <strong>in</strong> most of the <strong>di</strong>stricts the sol<strong>di</strong>ers were<br />

obliged to go and take the bo<strong>di</strong>es from the houses, carry them<br />

to the cemeteries on the regiment wagons, and <strong>di</strong>g <strong>di</strong>tches <strong>in</strong><br />

which to bury them.<br />

At such times the populace offered every<br />

possible resistance ; they were obliged to penetrate<br />

<strong>in</strong>to their<br />

lurid dwell<strong>in</strong>gs, bayonet <strong>in</strong> hand, and take possession of the<br />

bo<strong>di</strong>es by ma<strong>in</strong> force These<br />

bo<strong>di</strong>es they sometimes had to go<br />

and hunt for <strong>in</strong> the country, and when the arms of the sol<strong>di</strong>ers<br />

<strong>di</strong>d not suffice for the work, they had to force the peasants to<br />

render their assistance by threaten<strong>in</strong>g and dragg<strong>in</strong>g them to<br />

the spot.<br />

They were obliged to prevent the people from fly<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from the <strong>di</strong>stricts, by follow<strong>in</strong>g and lead<strong>in</strong>g them back by<br />

force to their houses, tak<strong>in</strong>g by the arm entire families, beggars,<br />

and troops of women and children who burst out <strong>in</strong>to tears<br />

and cries of despair.<br />

Throughout all the corps and detachments collections<br />

were taken up for the poorest families ;<br />

<strong>in</strong> some places a<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> quantity of bread was <strong>di</strong>stributed every day ;<br />

<strong>in</strong><br />

others meat and soup ;<br />

when noth<strong>in</strong>g else was to be had,<br />

they gave the rema<strong>in</strong>s of the rations, straw, old clothes,<br />

and someth<strong>in</strong>g at least. In many corps they formed committees<br />

for permanent succor ;<br />

the officers went every day <strong>in</strong>
