first see<strong>in</strong>g him after a long absence ; of hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

felt the contact<br />

of many gloves wet with tears of ; hav<strong>in</strong>g stopped several<br />

times to <strong>di</strong>sengage my sword from the hands of some boy who<br />

was shak<strong>in</strong>g it violently <strong>in</strong> order to make me turn around and<br />

take notice of his small " ewiva" ;<br />

then of hav<strong>in</strong>g walked quite<br />

a <strong>di</strong>stance with half a dozen bunches of flowers <strong>in</strong> my jacket, so<br />

that I looked like a country bridegroom ;<br />

and, f<strong>in</strong>ally,<br />

of hear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

resound about me a cont<strong>in</strong>uous and very loud hurrah. . . .<br />

But nonsense, they were not hurrahs, but <strong>in</strong>articulate cries,<br />

broken by sobs, stifled by embraces ;<br />

they were groans com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from chests oppressed and exhausted by the depth of joy ;<br />

voices with a tone that my ear had never heard before, but<br />

which had sounded many times <strong>in</strong> my m<strong>in</strong>d, when imag<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

the expression of a joy greater than human strength. The<br />

crowd m<strong>in</strong>gled with a <strong>di</strong>zzy rapi<strong>di</strong>ty, and, flow<strong>in</strong>g along, bore<br />

the sol<strong>di</strong>ers here and there, always, however, advanc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>di</strong>rection that the column had taken on its entrance ;<br />

and above<br />

the heads of the multitude could be seen a great wav<strong>in</strong>g of arms,<br />

muskets, and banners, and this one and that one rush<strong>in</strong>g violently<br />

together and <strong>in</strong>stantly separat<strong>in</strong>g, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the impetuosity<br />

of the embrace and the rapid separation of the civilians<br />

and sol<strong>di</strong>ers. The boys seized the sol<strong>di</strong>ers by the hems of<br />

their coats or by the sheath of the<br />

bayonet, and jealously <strong>di</strong>sputed<br />

their hands <strong>in</strong> order to press their lips on them ;<br />

and<br />

the women, too, young, old, of the people, or of rank, pressed<br />

the hands of the sol<strong>di</strong>ers and put flowers <strong>in</strong> the button-holes<br />

of their coats, ask<strong>in</strong>g them gently if they had come from far<br />

and felt tired. They handed them fruit and cigars, offered
