on arriv<strong>in</strong>g at the gate the greater portion of the crowd stop.<br />

There, aga<strong>in</strong>, you can imag<strong>in</strong>e a confusion<br />

and shout<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

is <strong>in</strong>describable ; an embrac<strong>in</strong>g and kiss<strong>in</strong>g ;<br />

a loosen<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

the arms from one <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

throw themselves <strong>in</strong>to the arms<br />

of another ;<br />

and so on, hurriedly exchang<strong>in</strong>g good wishes, salutations,<br />

and bene<strong>di</strong>ctions. F<strong>in</strong>ally, the regiment was outside<br />

of the gate and ranged <strong>in</strong> march<strong>in</strong>g order,<br />

two files to the<br />

right and two files to the left of the road. For a short time<br />

the sol<strong>di</strong>ers turned now and then toward the gate, where the<br />

crowd, still stationary, went on wav<strong>in</strong>g handkerchiefs and utter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cries of farewell ;<br />

but little<br />

by little, as it<br />

grew dark,<br />

the crowd could no longer be seen, the cries ceased, the sol<strong>di</strong>ers<br />

began march<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> order, and the officers, who at first<br />

had been walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> groups, fell <strong>in</strong>to their proper places.<br />

We had been on the march for many hours ;<br />

before arriv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at Padua we were tired and had already begun to move<br />

slowly and <strong>in</strong> <strong>di</strong>sorder ; yet on com<strong>in</strong>g out of the city we<br />

marched as if we had just then started from the camp after a<br />

long rest. The sol<strong>di</strong>ers walked erect, separate, and quickly ;<br />

the l<strong>in</strong>es were closed up, and a chit-chat was heard on every<br />

side.<br />

There were so many th<strong>in</strong>gs to be said.<br />

III.<br />

Now that night had fallen the lanterns were lighted. The<br />

appearance of the light brought me to myself, and showed me<br />

that we had not even left Padua ;<br />

then look<strong>in</strong>g here and there<br />

with <strong>di</strong>lated eyes, as we do when we wake <strong>in</strong> the room of a
