Carmela looked at him fixedly, and then dropped her head<br />

and eyes as if she were really th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. The officer said noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more and began talk<strong>in</strong>g sotto voce with the sol<strong>di</strong>er, whom<br />
