howl certa<strong>in</strong> bacchanal songs, rais<strong>in</strong>g their trenchers <strong>in</strong><br />

both hands at the end of every verse, bury<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

noses <strong>in</strong> them, and tak<strong>in</strong>g down the bad w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> long swallows<br />

;<br />

then a wav<strong>in</strong>g of caps <strong>in</strong> demonstration of their joy,<br />

a reciprocal clapp<strong>in</strong>g of hands on the back, and a sharp and<br />

surly shout<strong>in</strong>g of " Hurrah for the blonde," with certa<strong>in</strong> gr<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

a monkey-like pucker<strong>in</strong>g up of the nose, and the attitudes of<br />

satyrs. Around the group of more harmonious voices is a<br />

small circle of spectators, and <strong>in</strong> the midst of the chorus there<br />

is a <strong>di</strong>rector, who marks the time with his f<strong>in</strong>ger, and reproves<br />

any one who goes out of tune, perform<strong>in</strong>g his part <strong>in</strong> the most<br />

serious way, with a modest face, and glanc<strong>in</strong>g around as he<br />

does so at the au<strong>di</strong>ence, which cont<strong>in</strong>ues to <strong>in</strong>crease.<br />

Then there are the solitary and melancholy ones who take<br />

refuge from all that racket,<br />

and to whom the music and shout<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

even when heard at a <strong>di</strong>stance, causes sadness and contempt.<br />

They wander around the deserted portions of the<br />

camp, or seat themselves on the edges of the <strong>di</strong>tch, with their,<br />

feet just above the water, pok<strong>in</strong>g the sand and stones at the<br />

bottom with a willow stick, or else they lie stretched out across<br />

the open<strong>in</strong>g of the tent, their faces buried <strong>in</strong> their hands, the<br />

smoked-out pipe <strong>in</strong> their f<strong>in</strong>gers, and their eyes follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a<br />

dazed sort of way the beautiful little flame-colored clouds<br />

caused by the sett<strong>in</strong>g sun. Their eyes run over the tops of<br />

those mounta<strong>in</strong>s and they th<strong>in</strong>k what may be beh<strong>in</strong>d : a pla<strong>in</strong> ;<br />

then, other mounta<strong>in</strong>s; and beh<strong>in</strong>d these? another pla<strong>in</strong>;<br />

and so on over mounta<strong>in</strong>s, valleys, and unknown pla<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>in</strong><br />

imag<strong>in</strong>ation, until suddenly they <strong>di</strong>scern the dear and wellknown<br />

hills of their own home, and they contemplate with a<br />

m<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g of tenderness and grief that sunset which they have
