The greatest fun, however, was always at table, where someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

habit of unbutton<strong>in</strong>g our coats, for air, every time an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

statement was made and we <strong>di</strong>d little but button<br />

Another time no one was allowed to talk except <strong>in</strong> verses<br />

of melodrama, song, or quotations of the master, or title of the<br />

opera. Then came the mania for " food-steal<strong>in</strong>g," which was<br />

a regular calamity. However, we made a rule by which every<br />

one was obliged to abide. Any one who could carry off some<br />

tid-bit from a friend's plate had a right to it,<br />
