especially <strong>in</strong> Porto Empedocle, whence, <strong>in</strong> the month of<br />

March, it spread through the entire prov<strong>in</strong>ce, and from this, <strong>in</strong><br />

April, <strong>in</strong>to that of Caltanisetta, and <strong>in</strong>creased most terribly <strong>in</strong><br />

both dur<strong>in</strong>g the month of May, favored by the summer heat,<br />

that made itself<br />

felt a month earlier than usual <strong>in</strong> consequence<br />

of the long drought. It <strong>di</strong>d not decrease at all dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

month of June, save <strong>in</strong> the city of Caltanisetta, where it <strong>di</strong>m<strong>in</strong>ished<br />

perceptibly.<br />

In fact, dur<strong>in</strong>g the first part of that month,<br />

it <strong>in</strong>vaded the prov<strong>in</strong>ces of Trapani, Catania, and Syracuse,<br />

and at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of July, Palermo, and at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

August, Mess<strong>in</strong>a. Meanwhile it had spread through almost all<br />

the other prov<strong>in</strong>ces of <strong>Italy</strong>, and particularly <strong>in</strong> the southern<br />

ones ;<br />

more than all others, <strong>in</strong> Reggio, where it committed<br />

its last and most frightful ravages at the end of the year.<br />

From the first <strong>in</strong><strong>di</strong>cations that manifested themselves <strong>in</strong> the<br />

prov<strong>in</strong>ces of Girgenti and Caltanisetta, General Me<strong>di</strong>ci, command<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the <strong>di</strong>vision of Palermo, almost foresee<strong>in</strong>g the terrible<br />

course of the epidemic, put <strong>in</strong> force all the hygienic precautions<br />

prescribed by the M<strong>in</strong>ister of War <strong>in</strong> 1865. He <strong>di</strong>vided the<br />

corps <strong>in</strong>to a greater number of detachments, so that no city or<br />

village should be without them. He ordered that military hospitals<br />

for cholera patients, <strong>in</strong>firmaries for those suspected of<br />

the <strong>di</strong>sease, and houses for the convalescent, should be opened<br />

everywhere <strong>in</strong> the most remote and healthful localities.<br />

He <strong>in</strong>stituted<br />

a commission for sanitary surveillance <strong>in</strong> every <strong>di</strong>strict,<br />

prescribed most thorough and rigorous cleanl<strong>in</strong>ess, together<br />

with frequent <strong>di</strong>s<strong>in</strong>fections of the barracks ;<br />

he suspended every<br />

movement of the troops from the <strong>in</strong>fected localities to those<br />

that were healthful :<br />

obliged every corps and detachment to<br />

give its assistance <strong>in</strong> case of any call from the civil authorities
