They were all drawn up <strong>in</strong> the dormitory, and the quartermaster-sergeant<br />

was call<strong>in</strong>g the roll. The capta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terrupted<br />

him and gave his news, add<strong>in</strong>g :<br />

A moment of silence followed.<br />
