impetuously, not succeed<strong>in</strong>g, however, <strong>in</strong> conceal<strong>in</strong>g under that<br />

show of anger a certa<strong>in</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g of complacency.<br />

" Have you<br />

lost your heads "<br />

? Disperse ! The crowd separate, runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> every <strong>di</strong>rection. But the other sol<strong>di</strong>ers, who have sniffed a<br />

little festivity <strong>in</strong> the <strong>di</strong>stance, collect, but too late, however ;<br />

the cask is<br />

empty, and the capta<strong>in</strong>'s pocket-book<br />

is closed.<br />

The new arrivals wander around, glance warily at each other,<br />

do, as they say of the In<strong>di</strong>ans, turn their eyes upward to gaze<br />

at the clouds, and kick the stones about while yawn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>di</strong>fferently<br />

wish, but do not succeed, <strong>in</strong> <strong>di</strong>ssimulat<strong>in</strong>g it.<br />

Now let us look <strong>in</strong> another <strong>di</strong>rection, down there <strong>in</strong> the<br />

farthest corner. Along<br />

that l<strong>in</strong>e of wall runs a canal three<br />

or four metres <strong>in</strong> width, and <strong>in</strong> it are two palms' depth of water<br />

between two soft and slippery banks. On one of the sides are<br />

stand<strong>in</strong>g and sitt<strong>in</strong>g the sol<strong>di</strong>ers of the company, whose tents<br />

are near by.<br />

Suddenly there comes a voice from the group of<br />

officers stand<strong>in</strong>g on the opposite side : " Who wants to earn a<br />

lira? Here it is for the man who can jump this <strong>di</strong>tch," and a<br />

hand with a co<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> it is raised <strong>in</strong> the circle. All turn and run<br />

paces from the bank, stop, turn around, draw up <strong>in</strong> a semicir-
