And they all moved toward the sent<strong>in</strong>el. At the <strong>di</strong>stance of<br />

about thirty paces they stopped, drew up <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e, and began to<br />

look at him out of the corner of their eyes.<br />

The sol<strong>di</strong>er stood<br />

there, near his box, motionless and firmly, with his head erect and<br />

his eyes fixed on those provok<strong>in</strong>g faces which were ranged before<br />

him. Suddenly, out of the group steps a ragged youth, with a hat<br />

crushed over one ear, the stump of a cigar <strong>in</strong> his mouth, moves<br />

forward with his<br />

hands <strong>in</strong> his pockets, humm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a mock<strong>in</strong>g<br />

way, and comes and plants himself with<strong>in</strong> fifteen paces<br />

of the<br />

sent<strong>in</strong>el, look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>solently <strong>in</strong>to his face, cross<strong>in</strong>g his arms and<br />

assum<strong>in</strong>g an attitude of defiant impert<strong>in</strong>ence.<br />

The sol<strong>di</strong>er looked at him.<br />

Then the man whirled suddenly on his heel, turned his back,<br />

burst<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a concerted laugh with the others, who stood<br />

watch<strong>in</strong>g him and urg<strong>in</strong>g him on by signs.<br />

The sol<strong>di</strong>er shook his head two or three times, bit his lips,<br />

uttered a sigh, tapp<strong>in</strong>g the ground impatiently with his foot as<br />

if to "<br />

say : Ah, patience<br />

patience ! it is hard to bear "<br />

The rough turned, fac<strong>in</strong>g the sol<strong>di</strong>er once more, and,<br />

after a moment's hesitation, took from his mouth the cigar<br />

stump and threw it at his feet, retreat<strong>in</strong>g eight or ten paces to<br />

place himself beyond the reach of a sudden assault.<br />

The sol<strong>di</strong>er turned pale, raised his eyes to heaven, cl<strong>in</strong>ched<br />

his fists, and ground his teeth ;<br />

his m<strong>in</strong>d was grow<strong>in</strong>g confused.<br />

"Why do you do this to me ? " he then said sadly to himself,<br />

turn<strong>in</strong>g his eyes and face toward those people as if he were<br />

really speak<strong>in</strong>g to them. " What have you aga<strong>in</strong>st me ? Have<br />

I done any th<strong>in</strong>g to you ? I have done noth<strong>in</strong>g. Why <strong>di</strong>d I<br />
