all these reasons should not be sufficient to conv<strong>in</strong>ce the <strong>in</strong>credulous,<br />

or should the colors of the picture which I place<br />

before my readers' eyes appear too vivid or too fanciful, there<br />

would always be <strong>in</strong> confirmation of what I have asserted, the<br />

unanimous testimony of the populations, or that, not valid for<br />

all, but quite certa<strong>in</strong> and sacred for me, of my many companions<br />

<strong>in</strong> arms and the friends who saw and narrated what the<br />

sol<strong>di</strong>ers <strong>di</strong>d or how they <strong>di</strong>d it, with their hearts filled with<br />

gratitude and pride. From the light of their eyes and the<br />

sound of their voices I atta<strong>in</strong>ed the deep conviction which<br />

moves my heart and pen.<br />

Generally the companies were only united at even<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong><br />

the<br />

dormitory, at the hour of retreat. While wait<strong>in</strong>g the signal of<br />

the drum for the roll-call, the sol<strong>di</strong>ers related to one another<br />

what they had seen and done dur<strong>in</strong>g the day some of them<br />

;<br />

seated on their beds, others lean<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st the w<strong>in</strong>dows, the<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>der <strong>in</strong> groups<br />

<strong>in</strong> the middle of the dormitories. There<br />

were none of those movements, songs, laughs, or deafen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

shouts of joy, which <strong>in</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary times are so pleasant<br />

<strong>in</strong> the<br />

barracks at even<strong>in</strong>g. Most of the sol<strong>di</strong>ers were motionless,<br />

and noth<strong>in</strong>g was to be heard but a subdued whisper<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>terrupted<br />

here and there by some exclamation of surprise,<br />

anger, or pity, and long <strong>in</strong>tervals of silence, <strong>in</strong> which you<br />

would have said that all were sleep<strong>in</strong>g. The sol<strong>di</strong>ers who<br />

gradually arrived went quietly to their beds, and lay<strong>in</strong>g down<br />

their fatigue caps and belts, jo<strong>in</strong>ed the <strong>di</strong>fferent groups, each<br />

one quot<strong>in</strong>g the last rumor <strong>in</strong> the <strong>di</strong>strict, which was always<br />

one of misfortune. Any one not know<strong>in</strong>g it otherwise, would<br />

have been able to understand what was be<strong>in</strong>g thought and said
