and there <strong>in</strong> despair, hide <strong>in</strong> the fire-places, beh<strong>in</strong>d the furniture<br />

and doors ;<br />

the besiegers rush shout<strong>in</strong>g on to them,<br />

scatter them, hunt them, <strong>di</strong>scover them, drive them out, and<br />

drag them along, streak<strong>in</strong>g the floor and stairs with blood ;<br />

the conquered will not surrender ;<br />

the prisoners revolt, break<br />

away, throw themselves from the w<strong>in</strong>dows, and dash <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

court-yard, or get transfixed with bayonets <strong>in</strong> their backs, and<br />

fall dead <strong>in</strong> the door-ways ;<br />

others try to escape by the roofs ;<br />

others, wounded and dripp<strong>in</strong>g with blood, drag themselves out<br />

of the fray. The defenders of the flag are at the end of their<br />

resources. Surrender ! our men shout. No ! no !<br />

and bleed<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The capta<strong>in</strong>, without say<strong>in</strong>g a word,<br />

turns toward the enemy and stretches out his arm <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>di</strong>rection of the pla<strong>in</strong> to po<strong>in</strong>t out '<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g. Look . . .'<br />

There was an <strong>in</strong>term<strong>in</strong>able column of the enemy advanc<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

our back, and los<strong>in</strong>g itself <strong>in</strong> the green of the country.
