shoot at them from .their hid<strong>in</strong>g-places, they too lead a<br />

hard <strong>life</strong>. Yet see how gladly they do their !<br />

duty It is the<br />

same th<strong>in</strong>g with the sent<strong>in</strong>el. At night, such nights as these,<br />

who sees the sent<strong>in</strong>els enveloped <strong>in</strong> their cloaks, curled up<br />

at the back of their boxes, motionless and silent ;<br />

who hears<br />

them, knows who they are, or th<strong>in</strong>ks of them ? No one. Yet<br />

the sent<strong>in</strong>el must rema<strong>in</strong> at his post, without any melancholy<br />

thoughts <strong>in</strong> his m<strong>in</strong>d, and th<strong>in</strong>k :<br />
