Let us recall some other facts and names. The sub-lieutenant,<br />

Livio Vival<strong>di</strong>, commanded a detachment of the 54th regiment<br />

at Palazzo Adriano. The cholera spread there. The<br />

syn<strong>di</strong>c, physicians, chemists, and priests all fled ;<br />

no one but<br />

the poor rema<strong>in</strong>ed. Vival<strong>di</strong> kept every th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> order, and<br />

provided for all.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the day, he visited the sick, hastened<br />

the burials, had the place cleaned and <strong>di</strong>s<strong>in</strong>fected, and at<br />

night gave chase to the highwaymen who were scourg<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

country. Once, on the even<strong>in</strong>g of the tenth of July, while he<br />

was <strong>di</strong>stribut<strong>in</strong>g bread <strong>in</strong> the houses of the poor, he was <strong>in</strong>formed<br />

that a band of malefactors had gathered at a short <strong>di</strong>stance<br />

from the place. He ran to the barracks, took ten sol<strong>di</strong>ers<br />

with him, went out <strong>in</strong>to the country, surprised the band,<br />

attacked it,<br />

was wounded, cont<strong>in</strong>ued to fight, put<br />

it to flight,<br />

killed the head of it, arrested the others, returned to the town,<br />

and the follow<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g took up aga<strong>in</strong> his office of physician<br />

and almoner. And this was one <strong>in</strong>stance among many.<br />

At Gangi, <strong>in</strong> the prov<strong>in</strong>ce of Term<strong>in</strong>i, the cholera broke out<br />

toward the middle of June. Half the population fled. Those<br />

who rema<strong>in</strong>ed hid the dead, and shut themselves up <strong>in</strong> their<br />

houses for fear of be<strong>in</strong>g poisoned. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the night of the<br />

26th the boldest armed themselves and began rush<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

the country, fir<strong>in</strong>g bl<strong>in</strong>dly <strong>in</strong>to the w<strong>in</strong>dows and doors, and<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st any whom they happened to meet. The sharp-shooters<br />

from Petralia Sottana gathered, and gave chase throughout<br />

the night to the rioters, <strong>di</strong>spersed them with great <strong>di</strong>ffi-
