Such was the Abruzzi sol<strong>di</strong>er who looked so sullenly at his<br />

capta<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The first<br />

day he jo<strong>in</strong>ed the regiment with the other conscripts,<br />

still wear<strong>in</strong>g their peasant and work<strong>in</strong>g dress, the capta<strong>in</strong> had<br />

looked at him with an expression of curiosity, had said <strong>in</strong> the<br />

" "<br />

ear of the lieutenant :<br />

Look, what a forbidd<strong>in</strong>g countenance !<br />

and then smiled. The sol<strong>di</strong>er had noticed the smile. Upon<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g taken to the store-house, he had put on the first coat that<br />

was given him, and the capta<strong>in</strong>, on see<strong>in</strong>g him, <strong>in</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g, so<br />

bundled up, with a pair of<br />

sleeves which came down below his<br />

hands, and with great folds that covered his knee, began to<br />

laugh, and said : " You look like a rag-bag ! "<br />

His face grew<br />

.clouded, and he gave a sharp glance at the capta<strong>in</strong>. Another<br />

time, on the parade ground, when the conscripts were be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

taught their steps, and were called out from the ranks one by<br />

one, and made to walk some <strong>di</strong>stance to the sound of a drum,<br />

mov<strong>in</strong>g their legs slowly and stiffly like marionnettes, he was so<br />

embarrassed when his turn came that he could not take two<br />

steps without totter<strong>in</strong>g, stumbl<strong>in</strong>g, or mak<strong>in</strong>g such grotesque<br />

and laborious motions that all his comrades were obliged to<br />

laugh. His capta<strong>in</strong> arrived at this po<strong>in</strong>t and scolded him, so<br />

that he became worse than ever.<br />

Then the capta<strong>in</strong>, see<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

it was time quite lost, went off, say<strong>in</strong>g: "You are the worst<br />

sol<strong>di</strong>er <strong>in</strong> the company."<br />

Near by were some girls with children, who were look<strong>in</strong>g on,<br />

and they began to laugh loudly. He blushed to the roots of<br />

his hair, and returned to his place, gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g his teeth like a mad<br />

dog.<br />

So he became thoroughly conv<strong>in</strong>ced that the capta<strong>in</strong> <strong>di</strong>sliked<br />

him, reproved him only from a spirit of<br />

malice, and ri<strong>di</strong>-
