In practice, an RBI study typically uses aspects of qualitative, quantitative and
semi-quantitative approaches. These RBI approaches are not considered as
competing but rather as complementary. For example,
• a high level qualitative approach could be used at a unit level to select the
unit within a facility that provides the highest risk for further analysis.
