^"^ EXHIBITOR HAS HIS SAY (Continued from preceding page) Dark Wave (20th-Fox)—Short subject. Twentieth-Fox has a 20- minute Cinemascope short subject which deals with epilepsy among childi-en. This is an excellent short and I advise that every exhibitor show this subject. This short should be sold to the schools, so every child and parent could see it. If you could screen it for the superintendent of schools and some PTA members, it will sell itself. I failed to sell it, as I didn't know about its potential, but I expect to bring it back at a later date. You will have many good comments from your patrons after you show "Dark Wave." Don't pass this up by all means. Played Wed., Thm-s. —Mel Danner, Circle 'Theatre, Waynoka, Okla. Pop. 2,018. Last Wagon, The (20th-Fox)— Richard Widmark, Felicia Farr, Susan Kohner. This is an excellent picture and will do business. It failed at Wautoma. Weather was just too cold. Has been below zero 17 straight days. I'll bring this back in the summer. Played Pri., Sat. Weather: Very cold— 23 below zero.—Duane EUickson, Park Theatre, Wautoma, Wis. Pop. 1,376. UNITED ARTISTS Ambassador's Daughter, The (UA) —Olivia DeHavilland, John Forsythe, Myrna Loy. Real enjoyable comedy that didn't get the business it deserved. Comments good. Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Good.—Paul Ricketts, Ness Theatre, Ness City, Kas. Pop. 1,612. Attack! (UA)—Jack Palance, Eddie Albert, Lee Marvin. After reading the critics' reports, I was expecting this picture to do better than average business. It turned out to be a big disappointment. It was a good war picture, but very weak in star value. Personally, I think it would have been better in Cinemascope and in color. Played Thurs., Fri., Sat.—Marion F. Bodwell, Paramount Theatre, Wyoming, 111 Pop. 1,496. Sharkfighters, The (UA)—Victor Mature, Karen Steele, James Olson. Don't pass this one. Nobody has done a better job with color and Scope. A little too short, but has all the ingredients for success. Played Thurs. -Sat. Weather: Cold. — Jim Praser, Auditorium Theatre, Red Wing, Minn. Pop. 10,645, UNIVERSAL-INTERNAT'L Benny Goodman Story, The (U-I)—Steve Allen, Donna Reed, Berta Gersten. Temperatures at 20 below zero each night killed this one. The music was grand. Steve Allen perfect as Benny. Believe I'll try to get it back later. Played Fri., Sat., Sun.—Prank E. Sabin, Majestic Theatre, Eureka, Mont. Pop. 929. Day of Fury, A (U-D—Dale Robertson, Mara Corday, Jock Mahoney. No better and no worse than some of the other westerns I've played recently. Dale Robertson is the big name draw here and he turns in a creditable per- . formance. Nice color and good 12 support from the rest of the cast make for a fair feature. Nothing big here, though. Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Fine.—I. Roche, Vernon Theatre, Vernon, Fla. Pop. 610. Light Touch, The (U-D—Jack Hawkins, Margaret Johnston, Roland Culver. Good cast and very well done, but not terribly exciting. Business poor in spite of the fact Jack Hawkins usually is very popular with students. Played Sun., Mon., Tues.—Ken Gorham, Town Hall Theatre, Middlebury, Vt. Pop. 3,614. PiUars of the Sky (U-D—Jeff Chandler, Dorothy Malone, Ward Bond. We usually do business with Jeff Chandler, but when you mention Indians or show them on the advertising, there it goes! A good enough picture, but would have done much better on a weekend even at the present time. My patrons are all waiting for the big pictures. So am I. The ones that are, "It has been doing business." Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Cold.—Mayme P. Musselman, Roach Theatre, Lincoln, Kas. Pop. 1,636. Pillars of the Sky (U-D—Jeff Chandler, Dorothy Malone, Ward Bond. Very good picture that didn't do the business it should have. Played Sat., Sun. Weather: Cold.—Harold Smith, Dreamland Theatre, Carson, Iowa. Pop. 613. Showdown at Abilene (U-D— Jock Mahoney, Martha Hyer, Lyle Bettger. Excellent horse opera with a setting laid after the end of the Civil War. Played to average business, due to the weather. Used a cartoon and replay on "Tennessee Plowboy," really a good western short for our situation. Played Saturday. Weather: Cold and damp.—D. W. Trisko, Runge Theatre, Runge Tex. Pop. 1,055. Walk the Proud Land (U-D— Audie Murphy, Anne Bancroft, Charles Drake. This feature brought the lowest gross for three days of any picture that has played here in 13 years. It is worthy of showing any time or place. The drouth, plus TV, our mortal enemy, is really rough. Played Thurs., Fri., Sat. Weather: Good.—Leonard J. Leise, Roxy Theatre, Randolph, Neb. Pod 1,029. WARNER BROS. Animal World, The (WB)— Documentary. A sweetheart of a picture, and what color! Everyone will thoroughly enjoy this picture. Played Pri., Sat.—Ken Gorham, Town Hall Theatre, Middlebury, Vt. Pop. 3,614. Lone Ranger, The (WB)— Clayton Moore, Jay Silverheels, Lyle Bettger. Good average grosser. Outdid "The Searchers" by $20. At long last, a nice clean show, no sex, no excessive brutality, and many comments proved this point. One mother said she would send her youngsters often if the shows were like this one. It proves there is too much violence and brutality generally in screenfare. Weather: Good.— Leonard J. Leise, Roxy Theatre, Randolph, Neb. Pop. 1,029. FOREIGN ARGENTINA FEATURES. C "1 r? Ratio: Comedy-Drama bmiley r 2.55-1 © /" 20th-Fox (703-9) 97 Minutes ReL Jan. '57 A gentle, most heart-warming, tale of life in the bush country of Australia, this is ideal family fare for the neighborhood houses, mainly because its title character is a courageous, freckle-faced nine-year-old, played in completely i; engaging and natural fashion by CoUn Peterson. In addition to being too leisurely for the first runs and the action houses, the only marquee name is Ralph Richardson, the noted British film star who is currently starring on Broadway in "Waltz of the Toreadors." Produced and directed in Australia by Anthony Kimmins for London Films and superbly photographed in CinemaScope and Technicolor, the picture is always a treat for the eye, but is generally unexciting for adults during its first hour, being much like a "Tom Sawyer" tale. The first note of real conflict arrives during the latter part of the film and the actual climax has both suspense and thrills—even if they do come rather late. Richardson's role of the Baptist minister is comparatively minor, but he gives it distinction and "Chips" Rafferty, Australian favorite, is excellent as the local policeman, who also supplies the romantic Interest with pretty Jocelyn Hernfield.
