CINCINNATI
lyjany Kentucky and West Virginia towns
suffered heavy losses from the recent
flood, and it was not until the waters receded
and the task of cleaning up began
that the extent of losses was known. Two
Kentucky drive-ins were practically washed
out—the Auburn at Cumberland, owned by
O. G. Roaden. and the Lycinda at Fusonia,
for which Floyd Morrow of Louisville does
the booking and buying. The mud reached
over the speakers. Barbourville, Ky., was 60
per cent flooded. In Hazard and Pi-estonburg,
Ky., business sections were practically
wiped out. Corbin, Ky., Princeton, Bluefield,
Logan, Matewan and Delberton, W Va.. all
were hard-hit.
A few Kentucky exliibitors were in to attend
the Allied States drive-in convention.
They included James Dempsey, Starlight
Drive-In and Town Theatre, Danville, who
also has the Twin Hills Drive-In, Han-odsburg:
Dick Johnson. Family Drive-In, Lexington,
and Gene Combs, Grandvue Drive-
In, Hazard, whose theatre was flooded out
the recent Allied drive-in convention,
Mrs. William Onie was hospitality
chairman at the Variety clubrooms and her
graciousness accounted in large measure for
the enthusiasm of the women toward the
convention's social events.
Mrs. W. T. Ellswick, whose husband operates
the Belle Theatre, Belle, W. Va., returned
home after a month's confinement in the
hospital with injuries suffered in an automobile
accident. Their daughter also was
injured, but her stay in the hospital was
shorter.
Lee Heidingsfeld, manager for RKO, took
over February 9 as manager in this area for
Buena Vista. Heidingsfeld was with RKO for
ten years, and not many months ago was
promoted from city salesman to branch manager.
Under his management, the local
branch came in first on short subject billings
and fii-st in the group total billings in the Dan
O'Shea drive. Buena Vista will temporarily
be located in the office of States Film Service,
until a permanent location on Filmrow
is found. Lee went to Chicago for a meeting
with Harris Dudelson, Buena Vista division
manager.
Some of the other RKO employes have
made other connections. Robert Coleman, city
salesman, has left the film industry, and is
now salesman for Seinsheimer Paper Corp.
Marcella Ollie, manager's secretary, will do
secretarial work for the local Cincinnati
Post classified advertising section. Joan
Clemens is joining the force of U-I as
stenographer. Evelyn Nieheisel will join UA
as availability clerk. Office manager Leonard
Katz, bookers Bob Camery and Bob Cooper,
salesman Dave Litto, Don Womack, Heywood
Mitchusson, cashier Thelma Osborne and
several of the office personnel have not
made new connections yet.
Sam Galanty, district manager, Columbia,
was in the city conferring with Manager
Phil Fox. Also in were New York attorneys
Sam Reice and Dan Rothenberg. Columbia
auditor Gene Sisselman is currently working
in the exchange
Timmy drove down with Pate Niland,
retired UA West Virginia salesman, and
Tommy went down by bus.
Al Kucin, 20th-Fox auditor, arrived here
recently . . . U-I staffers were impressed with
Col. Dean Hess, who visited the exchange
during his stay in the city to plug "Battle
Hymn," which world premiered in Marietta,
Ohio, Col. Hess's home town, Thursday (14).
Hess has won renown for his efforts in behalf
of the Korean war orphans, and proceeds of
the premiere will be donated to orphanages
in Korea . Kimbrell, U-I head
inspector, is back at work after a recent
hospital stay for treatment of an ulcer condition
. . . William Garner, salesman for
James Barton Plans
New De Luxe Airer
CLEVELAND—James J. Barton, former
state representative and one of the principal
owners of the Pearl Road Drive-In which was
built two years ago in Cleveland on property
owned by Barton, has another extensive
project in view. He plans to build a de luxe
drive-in with complete adult and juvenile
recreational facilities in West Richfield at
Broadview road and Route 21. Estimated cost
of the project is $250,000. It will include, in
addition to the outdoor theatre, a swimming
pool, baseball diamonds, a picnic area and a
juvenile playground. This part of the project
will be available to the public all day.
Construction will start as soon as the West
Richfield township has approved rezoning the
48-acre tract of land. Hearing on the application
for rezoning was set for Friday (15) in
the West Richfield town hall. On the basis
of returned postcards to the residents of the
area, no opposition is anticipated inasmuch
as the township stands to profit by the project
by providing, without cost to the taxpayer,
a wholesome recreational atmosphere for
adults and children, an increase in surrounding
land values and additional employment
to be used in both the theatre and recreational
areas.
