T ynn "Red" Fetz, manager of the shipping
and inspection section of the Denver Film
Center, has disappeared. He was last seen
February 5 when he cashed a $30 pension
check at a bar near his home in North Denver.
His car was found on Broadway two
days later with a two-day accumulation of
parking tickets. The car was locked. At this
writing it is feared that he has met with
foul play. Always a hard worker, he would
not leave the business he has built up by
merely leaving town.
Al Brandon, one of the salesmen let out
when RKO merged with Universal, has gone
into the insurance business. Harold Copeland
has left for a trip that will take him to
Tucson, Ariz., and then to California, and if
he does not locate a job en route he might
return to Denver. Mike Stewart, New Mexico
salesman, will remain in Albuquerque and
will try and make connections there . . . Ted
Utah Bill Permits
County Aid for TV
SALT LAKE CITY—A former theatre exhibitor
currently is one of the leaders of a
group attempting to get legislative action
which would place television in remote Utah
communities. The ex-showman, John Rowberry
of Cedar City, was one of the proponents
of a bill that would allow communities
to use recreation funds for establishment
of television translator systems in areas currently
without TV.
The measure has passed the state senate
and currently Is being argued in the house.
As it stands now, the bill would allow
county commissioners to use funds for recreation
purposes to establish the translator
systems, to puj-chase property and to set up
facilities for putting m television. The funds
for recreation are raLsed from taxes.
Some communities located a distance from
transmitting facilities have TV through
community-owned systems, but the service
is available only to those who pay the connecting
fee and the service. Under the translator
system, television would be available
to the communities in which the county commissioners
decide to use the recreation funds
without toll fee.
Although theatre exhibitors did not appear
at a public hearing on the bill, it is believed
they are opposed to the measure. Daily
newspapers of the state are opposed to it.
Argument of the former group is that taxes
were not used to build theatres in any communities
so why should they be used for
establishing television facilities. Newspapers
have expressed a fear of "socialization" if
the bill passes.
Rowberry operated theatres at Cedar City
prior to selling out a few years ago to the
Yergensens.
Two LA Papers Turn Down
Ads on Japanese Film
LOS ANGELES—Because the word "prostitution"
was used, the Los Angeles Times
and the Herald-Express newspapers rejected
advertising copy on the Japanese-made film.
"Street of Shame," which was scheduled to
open Friday (15) at the Vagabond Theatre
of which Sydney Linden is manager.
Meanwhile, the Mirror-News and Examiner
had not ruled for or against similar copy
which Linden submitted to them.
Inasmuch as the feature deals with legalized
prostitution in Japan, Linden argued,
"How can you sell it if you don't use the
word prostitution? . . . how else can I describe
it?"
"We have this trouble from time to time,
but the papers use similar copy from other
theatres," the manager stated. "When I asked
them about it, they informed it 'slipped by,' "
complained Linden.
The manager asserts "Shame" Is an adultsonly
film and no minors will be admitted
to the Vagabond during the picture's run.
