"Run Silent, Run Deep" was previewed in
a submarine for a selected audience of naval
officers and guests. The makeshift theatre
was the after-torpedo room of the USS
Whale, the World War II submarine which
serves as training boat for Naval Reserve division
8-32 in New Orleans, and which is
berthed in the industrial canal. While the
picture was being .shown, she was feigning
battle activities, cruising "for a kill" 62 feet
beneath the surface

commander of the Whale, told the press it
was the first time any Hollywood film ever
received a full dress preview aboard a U. S.
.submarine. Credit for engineering the preview
went to Addy Addison jr., UA exploiteer.
Asa Boksh, manager of the Orpheum, is
"up in the clouds" these days. "Tlie Bridge
On the River Kwai," which opened the day
after the Academy Awards telecast, is packing
them in for each and every show, with
continuous lines at the boxoffice and overflowing
crowds in the massive lobby ... A
large morning audience was at hand at the
Joy Saturday (29) to cheer for contestants
in the battle of bands contest inspired by
"The Big Beat." which opened April 4.
Finals were held Sunday morning (30). Ernest
MacKenna, manager, said that 16 bands
were in the contest. The winning band or
combo of not more than six members receives
an all-expense-paid trip to New York
to audition for Decca records. The contest
was sponsored by U-I, the Joy and the Item.

back from a flying trip to Hollywood where
he attended the Academy Awards show at the

added to Variety's membership roster
two weeks prior to the end of the drive which
started in early February and ended this
week. The team standings in procurement of

membership meeting will be held Monday (14)
at 7 p.m.. preceded by a supper. Chief Barker
Dan Brandon has urged all to be present.

at 8 p.m.; auxiliary Tupperware party
(24i; The Junior League meeting sponsored
by Mrs. Henry Glover (22i, and special entertainment
night April 12.
Both Mr. and Mrs. William Sendy, who
own and operate the Patio on Airline Highway,
are confined to Baptist Hospital. Sendy
was rushed to the hospital a couple of weeks
ago. Mrs. Sendy, while visiting with her husband,
became ill. However, after being attended
by a hospital doctor, she insisted on
returning home. The following day she was
seized with another attack and ordered by
the family doctor to return to the hospital
for observation. The condition of each is
good.
