Can Be Installed for
A Small
Investment
Playgrounds and swimming pools are twin
playmates that are providing more fun and
revenue at drive-in theatres, says Norman
O. Miller, vice-president of American Playground
Device Co.
That swings, slides, diving boards and
other recreational equipment attract additional
patrons, is a well known fact. Conveniently
located near the concessions
stand, these play facilities promote hunger
and thirst, and boom the sales of hotdogs,
popcom and pop.

"A playground apparatus area need not
be expensive, but it can pay good dividends,"
Miller said. "For the average-size
drive-in. our company has made many installations
costing only several hundred
dollars. In such a setup there could be an
all-steel slide, castle walk, merry-go-round,
see-saw set and two swing sets, one of
which would be equipped with chair-type
nursery seats for the smaller tots.
"Swimming pools have been installed by
some of the larger drive-in theatres. It's
important that the praol have the proper
accessories. Conventional equipment is the
one-meter diving unit. It should be constructed
of 1%-inch tested steel pipe, with
the frame locked rigidly together by certified
malleable fittings."
Proper selection of diving boards will
greatly reduce maintenance expense. A
type which gives years of good service is
the regulation Douglas fir board of solid
laminated construction, according to Miller.
For pools where boards are subjected
to heavy use and abuse, he recommends
the American approved Lifetime aluminum
diving board. Developed by the one-time
national diving champion, Jim Patterson
of Ohio State University, this board eliminates
the broken board problem, increases
patronage and is said to pay for itself
within just a few seasons.
WATER SLIDES FOR POOLS
All-steel water slides are good attractions
at swimming pools. The chutes are
perfectly pitched for discharging bathers
into water depths of three and one-half to
four feet at a thrilling, yet completely safe
speed.
Picnicking facilities are also being provided
at some drive-ins to induce families
to come early and enjoy an outdoor meal.
The American heavy-duty picnic table is
ruggedly built with all-steel frames of
l^s-inch new, tested steel pipe, locked together
by heavy certified malleable fittings.
The table is eight feet long and accommodates
12 persons. Park benches also
can be conveniently placed near the playground
area so that parents may watch
their children at play.
