4-JTF Component METOC Support<br />

- Coordinate with the JMO <strong>and</strong> components as needed<br />

• JFMCC METOC Cell Support Requirements. The Cell will direct support to<br />

subordinate warfare comm<strong>and</strong>ers. Typically forecasts will be generated at the lowest<br />

level possible within the battle group. All or some forecasts may be generated onboard<br />

the METOC capable unit.<br />

- Briefings<br />

- Maritime data collection<br />

- Specific forecasts as required for various naval force missions:<br />

> Undersea Warfare<br />

> Surface Warfare<br />

> Air Warfare<br />

> Amphibious Warfare<br />

> Mine Warfare<br />

> Special Warfare<br />

> Comm<strong>and</strong> & Control Warfare<br />

> Information Warfare<br />

> TLAM go/no-go, strike warfare <strong>and</strong> target weather<br />

- Critical METOC thresholds for maritime missions are determined by the NAVFOR<br />

Comm<strong>and</strong>er. Reference Pub 1 (RP-1), “Environmental Effects on Naval Weapons<br />

Systems <strong>and</strong> Naval Warfare,” contains suggestions of limits for maritime<br />

operations; a few possible thresholds are listed in Appendix C. Items to be<br />

considered:<br />

> Surf conditions (denoted with the Modified Surf Index, MSI)<br />

> Sea State (SS) impacts on flight ops, mobility, replenishment at sea, airborne &<br />

shipborne MCM, <strong>and</strong> Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Ops<br />

> Ceiling <strong>and</strong> visibility impacts on shore <strong>and</strong> shipboard flight operations <strong>and</strong><br />

target <strong>and</strong> strike weather (for aircraft <strong>and</strong> Tomahawk missions)<br />

> Radar performance (refractivity profile)<br />

> Sonar performance (sound speed profile)<br />

> Electro-optical systems performance<br />

> Sensible weather (temperature, visibility, precip, altimeter setting, etc.)<br />

4.2.4 JSOTF/JFSOCC (<strong>Joint</strong> Special Operations Task Force/<strong>Joint</strong> Force Special<br />

Operations Component Comm<strong>and</strong>er).<br />

• Structure<br />

- Term JSOTF is generic <strong>and</strong> does not apply to any specific organization, unit or<br />

level of comm<strong>and</strong><br />

- May be small <strong>and</strong> temporary or large <strong>and</strong> permanent depending on mission<br />

- May be deployed as a joint organization or formed around an existing service force<br />

structure with an augmented staff<br />

- May consist of elements of the theater Special Operations Comm<strong>and</strong> (SOC) or may<br />

deploy as a complete package from outside of theater at direction of NCA<br />
