In our current poetic l<strong>and</strong>scape, identity is something the poet asserts the<br />

better to celebrate. Stein celebrates her suspension of identity, this holding<br />

off naming to see what otherwise emerges. Her writing becomes a<br />

state of willing, of willed, unknowingness.<br />

The question may well be art versus culture not art as culture.<br />
