and who went on to cont<strong>in</strong>ue their participation <strong>in</strong> media activism.<br />
There is noth<strong>in</strong>g like participation <strong>in</strong> a relevant, high activity pirate<br />
protest to engender a passion for the potenti<strong>al</strong> <strong>of</strong> radio. Lastly, <strong>Radio</strong><br />
Taktic liter<strong>al</strong>ly rocked the WTO with countless <strong>in</strong>-depth discussions<br />
and <strong>in</strong>formation about the negative consequences <strong>of</strong> neoliber<strong>al</strong> glob<strong>al</strong>ization.<br />
At the end <strong>of</strong> the protests, some <strong>of</strong> those <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the<br />
project were so <strong>in</strong>spired that they planned to keep the station runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>to the future. These aspirations were not fully re<strong>al</strong>ized, but <strong>Radio</strong><br />
Taktic cont<strong>in</strong>ued throughout that summer.<br />
The last major mobilisation for <strong>Radio</strong> Taktic was a live broadcast<br />
from a simulated P<strong>al</strong>est<strong>in</strong>ian refugee camp s<strong>et</strong> up <strong>in</strong> the empty lot<br />
next to the <strong>al</strong>ternative bookstore. This creative display was made up<br />
<strong>of</strong> sever<strong>al</strong> tents. One displayed pr<strong>of</strong>iles <strong>of</strong> two refugee brothers — one<br />
accepted by <strong>Canada</strong>, the other rejected — a second displayed audio/<br />
video productions <strong>of</strong> the stories <strong>of</strong> P<strong>al</strong>est<strong>in</strong>ian refugees, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>terviews with P<strong>al</strong>est<strong>in</strong>ian refugees liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Montré<strong>al</strong> who were<br />
threatened with deportation back to camps, and another had a map <strong>of</strong><br />
P<strong>al</strong>est<strong>in</strong>e. The radio programm<strong>in</strong>g highlighted the go<strong>al</strong>s <strong>of</strong> protestors<br />
who s<strong>et</strong> up the <strong>in</strong>teractive display featur<strong>in</strong>g life <strong>in</strong> refugee tents. The<br />
emphasis <strong>of</strong> <strong>Radio</strong> Taktic dur<strong>in</strong>g this symbolic protest was to focus on<br />
content about P<strong>al</strong>est<strong>in</strong>ian refugees, encourage listeners to come to the<br />
“camp,” and <strong>in</strong>terview the organizers on site.<br />
Although <strong>Radio</strong> Taktic was a temporary pirate radio project, the lessons<br />
it has to teach activists are many. Free radio can be used to dissem<strong>in</strong>ate<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation about protest actions to a whole community, be<br />
a part <strong>of</strong> creative resistance, and, simultaneously, serve the needs <strong>of</strong><br />
those participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the protests. <strong>Radio</strong> Taktic’s reach was impressive,<br />
not only broadcast<strong>in</strong>g loc<strong>al</strong>ly, but <strong>al</strong>so br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g the news <strong>of</strong> the<br />
mobilisation to other cities <strong>in</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> and other parts <strong>of</strong> the world via<br />
the <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>et</strong>. The decision to use web stream<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the anti-WTO<br />
protests is an important lesson <strong>of</strong> how to occupy the airwaves while<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a safe space and an accessible studio. Even if the station<br />
was not targ<strong>et</strong>ed by police <strong>in</strong> Montré<strong>al</strong>, tak<strong>in</strong>g steps to ensure that<br />
activists would not be directly l<strong>in</strong>ked to the illeg<strong>al</strong> action <strong>of</strong> occupy<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the airwaves was an important precaution.<br />
In other cities where there have been mass protests aga<strong>in</strong>st the WTO,<br />
Republican Nation<strong>al</strong> Convention or the Group <strong>of</strong> Eight (G8), such as<br />
<strong>in</strong> Genoa, London or New York, media centres support<strong>in</strong>g the actions<br />
have been targ<strong>et</strong>ed by police. In the case <strong>of</strong> <strong>Radio</strong> Alice, operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>
