Voices In a Public Place<br />

A Docudrama <strong>in</strong> Seven Acts<br />

on/for Micro-radio <strong>in</strong> <strong>Canada</strong><br />

Roger Farr<br />

Note on the Text<br />

“Voices <strong>in</strong> a Public Place” is divided <strong>in</strong>to seven “acts” — <strong>in</strong> the fullest<br />

sense <strong>of</strong> the word — which are titled after the seven components <strong>of</strong><br />

a basic micro-transmitter. 1 In its current appearance as a script, the<br />

piece is <strong>in</strong>tended to work as a k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> documentary poem (hence the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> citations). As text <strong>in</strong>tended for performance, however, <strong>al</strong>l names<br />

and citations are to be dropped <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> the pirate techniques <strong>of</strong><br />

sampl<strong>in</strong>g and appropriation.<br />
