<strong>in</strong> autonomous media around protests, the Vancouver convergence<br />

illustrates that activists, and particularly artists <strong>in</strong> this case, cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

to explore the possible uses <strong>of</strong> pirate stations <strong>in</strong> the context <strong>of</strong> direct<br />

action.<br />

As this recent example illustrates, the tactic<strong>al</strong> use <strong>of</strong> pirate radio no<br />

doubt ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s its place <strong>in</strong> the medley <strong>of</strong> tools used to amplify resistance<br />

and dissent, and, <strong>in</strong> the words <strong>of</strong> Felix Guatarri, to create “new<br />

space <strong>of</strong> freedom, self-management, and the fulfillment <strong>of</strong> the s<strong>in</strong>gularities<br />

<strong>of</strong> desire.” 18<br />

2. Autonomous media are a particular k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>al</strong>ternative media and are<br />

directly l<strong>in</strong>ked to soci<strong>al</strong> movements. They are def<strong>in</strong>ed by their openness — <strong>in</strong><br />

terms <strong>of</strong> content and membership — and their objective <strong>of</strong> amplify<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

voices <strong>of</strong> people and groups that norm<strong>al</strong>ly do not have access to the media.<br />

Autonomous media are <strong>in</strong>tended to provide people and communities with<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation that is <strong>al</strong>ternative to that with<strong>in</strong> the corporate mass media, and<br />

audiences are encouraged to participate directly <strong>in</strong> the production <strong>of</strong> content.<br />
