This text 1 was the curatori<strong>al</strong> statement for an event curated by Christ<strong>of</strong><br />

Migone and Jean-François Renaud. This event comprised an exhibition,<br />

a workshop, a performance even<strong>in</strong>g and a panel discussion. It<br />

took place August 8 to September 12, 1990, at the SAW G<strong>al</strong>lery, Ottawa,<br />

Ontario.<br />

The exhibition <strong>in</strong>cluded the <strong>in</strong>st<strong>al</strong>lations Sputniks by Nicolas Coll<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

L’espace voulu by Marguerite Dehler, There’s a Mirror/Ear at the<br />

End <strong>of</strong> My Bed by Nell Tenhaaf and Kim Sawchuk, and a video tape by<br />

Mbanna Kantako (born Dewayne Readus) entitled One Watt <strong>of</strong> Truth<br />

on the activities <strong>of</strong> his 1-watt pirate station WTRA <strong>in</strong> East Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield,<br />

Ill<strong>in</strong>ois, and the ensu<strong>in</strong>g struggles with the FCC.<br />

In addition, the follow<strong>in</strong>g works were available for listen<strong>in</strong>g by the<br />

g<strong>al</strong>lery visitors: Jacki Apple and Keith Antar Mason, Frenzy <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Night; L’ACRIQ <strong>in</strong>c., J’aurais pu l’écraser; blackhumor, no lust for the<br />

wicked; D. Morris, Flag Air Base; Andrew Herman and P. Cheevers,<br />

The Skull Bubble; and Hildegard Westerkamp, Kits Beach Soundw<strong>al</strong>k.<br />

On the even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> August 10, 1990 there were the follow<strong>in</strong>g performances:<br />

John Osw<strong>al</strong>d, Plunderphonology: A Polystomatic Dissertation;<br />

Gregory Whitehead, Terror Glottis; and Bruire (Michel F. Côté, Robert<br />

M. Lepage, Mart<strong>in</strong> Tétreault), Muss Muss Hic!<br />

Dan Lander conducted a workshop over three nights entitled The<br />

Referenti<strong>al</strong> <strong>in</strong> Sound.<br />

The symposium, <strong>Radio</strong> as Art: Issues <strong>of</strong> Creation, Issues <strong>of</strong> Regulation,<br />

was conducted by Paul Cheevers, Chant<strong>al</strong> Dumas, Andrew Herman,<br />

David Moulden, John Osw<strong>al</strong>d, Patrick Ready, Kim Sawchuk,<br />

Claude Schryer, Philip Szporer, Dot Tuer and Gregory Whitehead.<br />
