draw<strong>in</strong>g boundaries by the range <strong>of</strong> audibility created by these sm<strong>al</strong>l<br />
satellites. Because radio figures prom<strong>in</strong>ently <strong>in</strong> the discourse <strong>of</strong> acoustic<br />
ecology, a discipl<strong>in</strong>e that is centr<strong>al</strong> to my art practice, I began to<br />
wonder about the <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> radio with nature. This led to a new<br />
series <strong>of</strong> performances.<br />
<strong>Radio</strong> Soundw<strong>al</strong>ks<br />
At the Banff Centre <strong>in</strong> 1993, I started creat<strong>in</strong>g radio-based soundw<strong>al</strong>ks.<br />
The term “soundw<strong>al</strong>k” refers to the acoustic ecology practice <strong>of</strong><br />
w<strong>al</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>al</strong>ong a designated path and listen<strong>in</strong>g as deeply as possible, for<br />
b<strong>et</strong>ween 30 m<strong>in</strong>utes and one hour. It’s a pleasant activity for a group,<br />
particularly for those <strong>of</strong> us who are bored to tears <strong>of</strong> recit<strong>al</strong>s. However,<br />
if even one person <strong>in</strong> the group is not <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> listen<strong>in</strong>g, then<br />
the exercise becomes futile for <strong>al</strong>l <strong>in</strong>volved. The soundw<strong>al</strong>k becomes a<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>ful game <strong>of</strong> shush<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>of</strong>fenders who seem to only want to do it<br />
more when they re<strong>al</strong>ize they are break<strong>in</strong>g the rules!<br />
By <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g radio <strong>in</strong>to performance, I found a k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> tool that<br />
could act as a common thread, to l<strong>in</strong>k beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to end and to contextu<strong>al</strong>ize<br />
the whole. I was try<strong>in</strong>g to heighten the listener’s experience
