Awaken<strong>in</strong>g the ‘Voice <strong>of</strong> the Forest’ • 87<br />

the previous day and show<strong>in</strong>g them how to use the edit<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>of</strong>tware.<br />

Paul was on the other computer, l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g up songs and download<strong>in</strong>g<br />

music <strong>of</strong>f the <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>et</strong>. His latest selection — a Wu-Tang Clan song<br />

— blared through the big black stereo on the other side <strong>of</strong> the room.<br />

With Courtney’s help, Sonny and the guys s<strong>et</strong> up an email account for<br />

the radio, and a blog to post audio and photos, as well as to l<strong>in</strong>k the<br />

radio with other aborig<strong>in</strong><strong>al</strong> radio stations.<br />

The sun was s<strong>et</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, and we had to beg<strong>in</strong> the long drive down to<br />

Monyak, as Montré<strong>al</strong> is known <strong>in</strong> Algonqu<strong>in</strong>. We said our goodbyes,<br />

promis<strong>in</strong>g to r<strong>et</strong>urn <strong>in</strong> a few weeks with more equipment, hopefully<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g some portable recorders. As we left the school, a few more<br />

young men showed up, jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the five or six others gathered with<br />

Sonny around the mic and computer. We made the rounds <strong>of</strong> the<br />

reserve quickly, stopp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> houses and thank<strong>in</strong>g everyone for their<br />

hospit<strong>al</strong>ity and promis<strong>in</strong>g to r<strong>et</strong>urn soon. Migw<strong>et</strong>ch (thank you) they<br />

said. Kanagootsanun, we replied. You’re welcome.<br />

Soon we were <strong>in</strong> the car driv<strong>in</strong>g down the narrow, snow-covered<br />

road that leads from the reserve to the highway a few kilom<strong>et</strong>ers away.<br />

We turned on the radio and s<strong>et</strong> it to 107.9 FM, just <strong>in</strong> time to catch the<br />

end <strong>of</strong> Sonny <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g a song. “... listen<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>Radio</strong> Barriere Lake,<br />

Mitchik<strong>in</strong>abiko’<strong>in</strong>ik nodaktcigen, the ‘Voice <strong>of</strong> the Forest’ ... Migw<strong>et</strong>ch.”<br />

Out the w<strong>in</strong>dow, frozen lakes rolled by, disappear<strong>in</strong>g and appear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> b<strong>et</strong>ween the thick stands <strong>of</strong> snowy p<strong>in</strong>es. As we headed south,<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the dense wilderness, kilom<strong>et</strong>er by kilom<strong>et</strong>er head<strong>in</strong>g deeper<br />

<strong>in</strong>to so-c<strong>al</strong>led “civilization,” where native peoples have been forgotten,<br />

<strong>Radio</strong> Barriere Lake’s sign<strong>al</strong> got weaker and weaker and soon was lost<br />

amidst the fuzz. But up <strong>in</strong> Rapid Lake, Sonny had just put Toby’s wampum<br />

story on the air, and three generations <strong>of</strong> Barriere Lake Algonqu<strong>in</strong>s<br />

were sitt<strong>in</strong>g around t<strong>in</strong>y radios, listen<strong>in</strong>g.
