The Care and Feed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

Temporary Autonomous <strong>Radio</strong><br />

a large man entered the bar with a gh<strong>et</strong>to blaster<br />

on his shoulder. It was tuned to TAR 99.1 FM, and punk rock music<br />

from The Remanes, who were play<strong>in</strong>g live on stage, spewed out. He<br />

was <strong>al</strong>ready groov<strong>in</strong>g, but as he turned the corner and caught view <strong>of</strong><br />

the stage, a huge gr<strong>in</strong> covered his face. He yelled his support, which <strong>in</strong><br />

turn was picked up through the voc<strong>al</strong> microphones, only to be narrowcast<br />

back through his radio and <strong>in</strong>to his ear. He proceeded to rock<br />

out on the edge <strong>of</strong> the mosh pit.<br />

He wasn’t the first to wander <strong>in</strong>to the bar that day, c<strong>al</strong>led forth by<br />

the sounds emanat<strong>in</strong>g from the radios across Victoria tuned <strong>in</strong>to TAR<br />

99.1 FM. This was Temporary Autonomous <strong>Radio</strong>’s most recent festiv<strong>al</strong>,<br />

cheekily be<strong>in</strong>g broadcast out <strong>of</strong> a bar full <strong>of</strong> people who had been<br />

enticed by the live folk, tradition<strong>al</strong>, roots, <strong>al</strong>t country, rock and punk<br />

music be<strong>in</strong>g played by the bands tak<strong>in</strong>g over the airwaves. B<strong>et</strong>ween<br />

bands, live <strong>in</strong>terviews were tak<strong>in</strong>g place from the corner <strong>of</strong> the bar<br />

— our on-air studio — <strong>in</strong>terspersed with spoken word, sound art and<br />

more tunes. Performers had been mention<strong>in</strong>g the bar name (omitted<br />

here so that the venue can be potenti<strong>al</strong>ly used aga<strong>in</strong>) <strong>al</strong>l even<strong>in</strong>g, much<br />

to the manager’s chagr<strong>in</strong>, and people were listen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>al</strong>l over the city<br />

due to the posters, <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>et</strong> and email lists, word <strong>of</strong> mouth and even<br />

promotion on CFUV, the licensed campus and community station.<br />
