The Program<br />

Independent filmmaking is the focus of both<br />

the undergraduate film area and the masters<br />

program (see Theatre Arts). We advocate<br />

a hands-on approach, where students<br />

are encouraged to experience film by making<br />

films. Basic preproduction, production,<br />

and postproduction skills are taught, with<br />

emphasis on experimental, documentary,<br />

and narrative forms.<br />

Students fund their own films, though there<br />

is sometimes a modest budget for class<br />

projects. During fall and spring semesters,<br />

students can apply for Answer Print Funds<br />

(used for bringing 16mm films to completion),<br />

based on the overall integrity and quality of<br />

the film and the grant proposal.<br />

The annual <strong>Humboldt</strong> International Film<br />

Festival, produced and organized by students,<br />

is the oldest student-run festival in<br />

the world. Conceived in 1967, this annual<br />

spring showcase brings to the university and<br />

<strong>Humboldt</strong> County a week of exciting activities:<br />

workshops with professional filmmakers,<br />

screenings of international filmmakers’ recent<br />

works, and opportunities for individual<br />

sessions with visiting artists. The festival is<br />

a juried competition attracting film entries<br />

from all over the world. There are many<br />

opportunities for student involvement in the<br />

festival, including several paid positions as<br />

festival co-directors.<br />

This minor prepares persons for careers<br />

using the basic skills of cinematography,<br />

editing, directing, and sound recording and<br />

engineering.<br />
