The Program<br />
The minor in Chinese Studies, housed in<br />
the Department of World Languages and<br />
Cultures, is characterized by its interdisciplinary<br />
nature. It consists of a minimum of<br />
26 credit units including core and elective<br />
classes. The minor program gives students<br />
a language experience and solid cultural<br />
base upon which to build an understanding<br />
of Chinese culture and society. Additionally,<br />
students are encouraged to participate in<br />
authorized programs abroad to complete<br />
minor requirements. Selection of courses<br />
is to be made with the counsel of a Chinese<br />
Studies faculty advisor.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR<br />
Core<br />
Must take the following three courses for a<br />
total of 12 units:<br />

CHIN 112 Chinese Level II<br />
CHIN/ES 109 Intro to Chinese Studies<br />
Electives<br />
Must take a minimum of five units from the<br />
following list:<br />

Study Abroad Options<br />
Students pursuing a Chinese Studies Minor<br />
are strongly encouraged to participate in<br />
an HSU or CSU study abroad program in<br />
China. They may study for one semester or<br />
one year. Classes taken in such programs<br />
can be counted toward the minor upon<br />
prior consultation and approval by a Chinese<br />
Studies faculty advisor.<br />
HSU China/Tibet Summer Field Trip<br />
This is an HSU 6-week summer program<br />
offered by the Department of Geography.<br />
This program is an in-depth field experience<br />
studying Chinese/Tibetan cultures,<br />
landscapes and economies. Students participating<br />
in this program may earn up to<br />
9 credit units toward the minor upon previous<br />
consultation and approval of a Chinese<br />
Studies faculty advisor.<br />
HSU Xi’an Program in China<br />
This is an HSU semester program abroad<br />
offered by the Chinese Studies Program. The<br />
program takes place at Xi’an International<br />
Studies <strong>University</strong> in the old imperial city of<br />
Xi’an. This is a full immersion language and<br />
culture program for students who would<br />
like to advance in their Mandarin language<br />
proficiency. All courses completed in this program<br />
may be counted toward the Chinese<br />
Studies minor.<br />
