Chile (synoptic case)<br />
Overview<br />
Chile offers an example of a country with<br />
a great number of natural hazards that<br />
has relied on a transversal approach<br />
to <strong>in</strong>fus<strong>in</strong>g DRR <strong>in</strong> the curriculum.<br />
The strategy is based solely on the <strong>in</strong>put<br />
provided by a m<strong>in</strong>istry document sent to<br />
schools; there has not been capacity<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g or monitor<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The Integral Plan for <strong>School</strong> Safety was produced by the relevant<br />
national agency as a methodological tool to help schools be<br />
prepared for evacuation and to improve the safety of the<br />
educational community. It <strong>in</strong>cludes some elements concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the development of a culture of prevention. The plan has been<br />
dissem<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> most schools and more than 2000 teachers<br />
have been tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> its application, but there is <strong>in</strong>sufficient<br />
fund<strong>in</strong>g for its generalization to all teachers and for any<br />
subsequent monitor<strong>in</strong>g activities.<br />
A website 93 addressed to children that <strong>in</strong>cludes some materials<br />
about school safety, and short explanations of different disasters<br />
and appropriate behaviour <strong>in</strong> each case (earthquakes, tsunamis,<br />
volcanoes, floods, forest fires and landslides) has been developed.<br />
Some projects funded by <strong>in</strong>ternational cooperation agencies<br />
have promoted the <strong>in</strong>clusion of the DRR approach at a pilot<br />
scale, but the policymakers have not yet committed to fund<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the promotion and dissem<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g good practices.<br />
The National Curriculum was analyzed by the Education M<strong>in</strong>istry<br />
to identify places <strong>in</strong> which topics of DRR could be <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />
as a transversal dimension. A document for schools has been<br />
produced, but there has been no further action on capacity<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this direction, nor with the topic of the <strong>in</strong>itial tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
of teachers.<br />
