Kazakhstan<br />
A national workshop for m<strong>in</strong>istries, <strong>in</strong>stitutions and members<br />
of parliament held <strong>in</strong> Astana <strong>in</strong> June 2011 to review the<br />
DIPECHO project as it came to an end recommended the<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g: ‘<strong>in</strong>clude DRR issues <strong>in</strong>to the (new) 12-year school<br />
education curricula; <strong>in</strong>tegrate DRR <strong>in</strong>to (an) exist<strong>in</strong>g school<br />
subject <strong>in</strong> accordance with the education plan and extracurricular<br />
hours; cont<strong>in</strong>ue teachers’ tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> disaster risk<br />
reduction at the advanced teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses’.<br />
The report for the workshop noted that ‘it is to a great regret<br />
of the organizers and participants of the workshop, representatives<br />
of the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Education were not represented at this<br />
important meet<strong>in</strong>g’ (National Workshop, 2011). All partners<br />
<strong>in</strong> the DIPECHO process agreed that ‘the new DRR materials<br />
should become <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong> the mandatory school curriculum<br />
<strong>in</strong> Kazakhstan’ (UNICEF, 2011, 7).<br />
