<strong>School</strong> <strong>in</strong> the sub-district of Peudada, Bireuen District, <strong>in</strong> Aceh<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>ce. The area was not affected by the tsunami, but suffered<br />

years of conflict between a separatist rebel group and the<br />

government. The school is one of 160 quake-resistant,<br />

child-friendly schools built with UNICEF assistance <strong>in</strong> Aceh<br />

and Nias. An additional 180 schools are under construction<br />

and 235 semi-permanent school units were also completed.<br />

the earthquakes, <strong>in</strong> the coastal city of Padang, capital of West<br />

On 26 April, girls attend class <strong>in</strong> a tent at Celie-Lilavois Primary<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>in</strong> the centre of Port-au-Pr<strong>in</strong>ce, the capital. UNICEF has<br />

set up tent classrooms and provided educational supplies at<br />

the school. Some 4,700 schools were damaged or destroyed,<br />

affect<strong>in</strong>g some 700,000 school-age children. UNICEF<br />

assistance <strong>in</strong>cludes: clear<strong>in</strong>g rubble from school sites, <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g<br />

water and sanitation facilities, and provid<strong>in</strong>g ‘school-<strong>in</strong>-a-box’<br />

kits, recreation kits and other supplies. UNICEF is also<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g the nationwide ‘movement for learn<strong>in</strong>g’ to<br />

encourage a return to school and to promote first-time<br />

attendance by the estimated 55 per cent of children who<br />

have never attended school.<br />
