term environmental plann<strong>in</strong>g from 2011 to 2021. One of<br />

PLANAA’s ma<strong>in</strong> objectives is to achieve complete implementation<br />

of the National Policy on <strong>Disaster</strong> Prevention and Response at<br />

the national level by 2021. In order to achieve this, Strategic<br />

Action 7.6 seeks to strengthen environmental education at<br />

basic and secondary levels. The measurement for this objective<br />

is the percentage of primary and secondary schools with outstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

achievements <strong>in</strong> environmental education (M<strong>in</strong>isterio<br />

del Ambiente, 2011, 38).<br />

At the <strong>in</strong>ternational level, Peru is also deeply committed to<br />

regional <strong>in</strong>tegration processes that have brought DRR to the<br />

forefront. In 2002 Peru became part of the Andean sub-regional<br />

mechanism for Prevention and Response <strong>in</strong> <strong>Disaster</strong>s<br />

(CAPRADE) that promotes a DRR Andean Strategy. From<br />

2004 to 2009, Peru participated <strong>in</strong> a Project to Support <strong>Disaster</strong><br />

<strong>Risk</strong> Prevention (PREDECAN) <strong>in</strong> the Andean Community (CAN).<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> objective of PREDECAN was to ‘contribute to reduce<br />

vulnerability of people and goods exposed to natural hazards<br />

and risks; and to promote susta<strong>in</strong>able development with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

CAN countries’ 99 . Education and communication was one of<br />

the work<strong>in</strong>g areas of PREDECAN which resulted <strong>in</strong> the creation<br />

of a series of documents aimed at facilitat<strong>in</strong>g and guid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

DRR <strong>in</strong>sertion <strong>in</strong> school curricula.<br />
