Turkey, August 1999: Asuma<strong>in</strong>, 7, sits beside her grandmother<br />
outside the tent where the family is now liv<strong>in</strong>g near their destroyed<br />
house <strong>in</strong> the north-western town of Gulcuk, epicentre<br />
of the massive earthquake that struck North-West Turkey that<br />

On 6 October, boys sort through school books and other<br />
salvaged educational materials at destroyed Elementary <strong>School</strong><br />
17 <strong>in</strong> the coastal city of Padang, capital of West Sumatra<br />
Prov<strong>in</strong>ce. Several hundred schools were among more than<br />
180,000 build<strong>in</strong>gs damaged or destroyed dur<strong>in</strong>g the earthquakes.<br />
Over the past two days, UNICEF has distributed<br />
15 school tents <strong>in</strong> the area, and an additional 228 are en route.<br />
