Students attend class for the first time s<strong>in</strong>ce the cyclone,<br />

at State Primary <strong>School</strong> No. 32 <strong>in</strong> Hla<strong>in</strong>g Thar Yar Township<br />

<strong>in</strong> the southern Yangon Division. Prior to reopen<strong>in</strong>g, the school<br />

was used as a temporary relief camp for those affected by the<br />

cyclone. UNICEF has provided the school with roof<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and other repair materials, two 'school-<strong>in</strong>-a-box' kits, each<br />

with teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g materials for 80 students,<br />

and a recreation kit conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sports equipment and games.<br />

The school was damaged by floods from Tropical Storm Washi.<br />

Eight of the city’s schools are be<strong>in</strong>g used as evacuation centres,<br />

and 12 were flood-affected. Despite major challenges, schools<br />

reopened on 3 January, but needs rema<strong>in</strong> great.<br />

Primary <strong>School</strong> <strong>in</strong> Tondo, a neighbourhood of Manila, the<br />

capital of the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es to promotes environmental awareness<br />

through story-tell<strong>in</strong>g and other activities. This was done <strong>in</strong> the<br />

framework of the child-friendly schools programme, promoted<br />

by UNICEF globally, and which strive to create safe, protective<br />

and <strong>in</strong>clusive spaces for all children, especially girls, and<br />

encourage the <strong>in</strong>volvement of parents and the community.<br />
