No Longer a Slumdog<br />

Volkswagen bug—it still works! I remember in the early days of<br />

the ministry when God convicted me about how much money I<br />

spent on chewing gum.<br />

Please don’t misunderstand. I’m <strong>no</strong>t saying that a nice car or<br />

new clothes or anything like that is a bad thing. If poverty made us<br />

more spiritual, then there would be a lot of really spiritual people<br />

all over South Asia. No. This is about seeing the little ways that the<br />

Lord calls us to live simply so that others might simply live.<br />

God reveals to people all over the world about the small<br />

sacrifices they can make in His name. In one instance, there was<br />

a mother who used to spend $30 every month to buy a special<br />

makeup she loved. She knew in her heart that it was only a fleeting<br />

thing, and she wanted to invest in something with eternal<br />

value. The Lord had been telling her family to die to the cares<br />

of this world and to take up their cross and follow Him. So they<br />

did, and He led them to support a GFA Bridge of Hope child.<br />

Together with her two sons, ages 7 and 9, she picked out a child<br />

to sponsor and pray for. Her boys even gave $2, the only money<br />

they had. As they pray together and write to their child, it’s been<br />

a great way to bond as a family.<br />

I recall a<strong>no</strong>ther family that downgraded their cable subscription<br />

so that they could sponsor two children. Their hope was to<br />

teach their own children to enjoy giving more than receiving.<br />

They could honestly say, “What a difference [Gospel for Asia] is<br />

making in the lives of children . . . including our own.”<br />

One little girl gave “lots of money” to sponsor a<strong>no</strong>ther young<br />

girl in Asia. Her words were, “I am almost 5 years old, and I saw<br />

the little children who had <strong>no</strong> clothes, food, dolls or anything<br />

and had to dig in the garbage. So I got out lots of money to give<br />
