Her husband went to his parents for help, but they refused<br />
because Mariyam was of a lower caste than they were. When he<br />
returned home, beside himself with grief, he did the unthinkable;<br />
he committed suicide by dousing himself with kerosene and<br />
setting himself on fire.<br />
Mariyam was left in shock. She was <strong>no</strong>w a widow with a lame<br />
foot, an infant daughter, two school-age boys and <strong>no</strong> income. She<br />
did what she could to sell odds and ends but only made about Rs.<br />
10–20 (maybe 30 cents) a day. The family was <strong>no</strong>t surviving.<br />
That’s when the Lord sent a sister from the local church to<br />
visit her. She shared the love of Christ, and Mariyam, hearing<br />
there was a God who loved her in the midst of this suffering,<br />
received Jesus into her heart. She started to attend church and<br />
learned about GFA Bridge of Hope.<br />
Her sons were admitted into the GFA Bridge of Hope program,<br />
where their tuition was paid and they received help with<br />
their studies. They were also fed a wholesome meal every day,<br />
which was something their mother wasn’t able to provide. Because<br />

Healthy Living<br />
Part of the curriculum taught at the centers is on health and<br />
hygiene. We teach children the importance of washing their hands<br />
after using the facilities and before they eat, as well as taking a bath<br />
