Once A Slumdog, Always a Slumdog<br />

Indrani marveled at how they were maturing, wishing that<br />

she had such an opportunity when she was young. But then she<br />

thought, If my children are able to change, why can’t I So she started<br />

to pray to the Lord and go to church. She gave up her drinking,<br />

her gambling and her tobacco use.<br />

part of a local congregation and are<br />

growing in the Lord.<br />

Our work to rescue the suffering does <strong>no</strong>t end with just one<br />

child’s bright future and newfound hope in Christ, but hope is<br />

carried on to their family, relatives and community.<br />

Although the caste in which they were born dictated that<br />

this family would never be able to change, they were completely<br />

transformed. I hate to think about what the life of Indrani’s eight<br />

girls would be like if they too grew up believing they were only<br />

good e<strong>no</strong>ugh to be <strong>slumdog</strong>s and beg for a living.<br />

Hope at Last<br />

God has always been in the business of redemption—just<br />

think of the Israelites. He saw their affliction. He heard their<br />

cries. He knew their sufferings. And so He came down to deliver<br />

them. This is the story we read in the book of Exodus when some<br />

600,000 Israelites were finally freed after 400 years of captivity.<br />

Likewise, God has seen the 250 million people who have<br />

been living in perpetual servitude for the past 3,000 years. He<br />

k<strong>no</strong>ws the plight of the 50 million child laborers in India. 10<br />
