No Longer a Slumdog<br />
C.S. Lewis put it very well when he said, “The more often we<br />
feel without acting, the less we will be able ever to act, and, in the<br />
long run, the less we will be able to feel.” 2<br />
We have <strong>no</strong>w walked together through almost all the pages<br />
of this book. You have started to feel the pain and anguish of<br />
these forgotten lives. I assume your heart was touched as you<br />
read the real-life accounts of the Dalits, the OBCs and especially<br />
their precious children.<br />
Please don’t close your heart <strong>no</strong>w. Don’t start to numb the<br />
pain you feel for these suffering, helpless children. Please love<br />
them. Love them in Jesus’ name.<br />
You and I did <strong>no</strong>t ask to be born and raised in the circumstances<br />
and comforts we have. You too could have been born destitute<br />
in one of the slums of Calcutta or in a Dalit family in Bihar.<br />
You could have been that little <strong>slumdog</strong>, blinded and turned into<br />
a street beggar. It’s true, you might even have been sold into the<br />
sex business and died long before your 20th birthday.<br />
God in His mercy gave us the privilege of living our lives with<br />
the freedom and blessings words can’t describe. Just remember<br />
Jesus’ words: “From everyone who has been given much, much<br />
will be required” (Luke 12:48, nasb).<br />
There is <strong>no</strong> need to feel guilt and self-condemnation for the<br />
blessings we have. Instead, let us choose to see this challenge as an<br />
opportunity to be like Jesus in our generation.<br />
I think you will agree, once in a while God tries to break into<br />
our <strong>no</strong>rmal lives and tell us something important. He brings a<br />
matter to our attention that tears at our hearts, maybe even<br />
brings us to our knees. But then, sadly, so often that is all that<br />
happens. Although it consumes us for a little while and we can’t<br />
