Herringbone<br />

The herringbone is used to provide 360-degree security during a temporary halt from a march column (see Figure 8-<br />

16) scouts should dismount to provide greater security. The formation may be widened to permit passage of vehicles<br />

down the center of the column. All vehicles should move completely off the road if terrain allows.<br />

SECTION FORMATIONS<br />

When the platoon operates in a configuration with two sections of three vehicles each, the individual sections can<br />

employ formations of their own. Figure 8-<strong>17</strong> illustrates the two three-vehicle section formations: vee and wedge. The<br />

vee formation provides maximum reconnaissance forward and speeds the rate of reconnaissance while using a single<br />

vehicle for overwatch. The wedge formation provides maximum security, with two vehicles overwatching the<br />

reconnoitering vehicle forward.
