PURPOSE STATEMENT<br />

Student Health Services strives to establish a caring environment at <strong>Barry</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> as it relates to health issues. Our goal is to promote an optimal level of wellness<br />

and provide options for the delivery of enhanced health care services in the general<br />

community.<br />

SERVICE PROVIDED AT HEALTH SERVICES:<br />

Assessment of injury or illness by a registered nurse.<br />

Referral to an on campus nurse practitioner.<br />

Referral to off campus health care providers.<br />

Provisions of over the counter medications.<br />

Administration of immunizations, including MMR’s, Tetanus, Hepatitis A & B, Varivax<br />

and PPD’s.<br />

Administration of the student health insurance plan.<br />

Assistance with coordination of insurance benefits.<br />

Health education and illness prevention.<br />

Pharmacy delivery service from a local pharmacy.<br />

For emergencies during office hours, the Health Services staff can be reached at<br />

their office (305) 899-3750. For emergencies during evening and weekend hours, the<br />

health advisors can be contacted by calling security or a resident advisor. In an extreme<br />

emergency call 911.<br />

As noted earlier, health advisors are available during evening and weekend hours to<br />

serve our varied student population. They may be contacted via a beeper system or through the<br />

residential life advisors (R.A.’s).<br />

To assure that appropriate medical care can be given to the student should the need<br />

arise, all resident and international students are required to have:<br />

A completed health record on file in student health services with medical<br />

documentation of a tetanus diphtheria vaccination within the last 10 years and students born<br />

after 1956 are required to have medical documentation of 2 measles vaccinations or a natural<br />

case of measles. A signed medical authorization form and proof of an adequate medical<br />

insurance in South Florida is required. It is the responsibility of the student to provide a proof<br />
