Spring Break
Residence halls remain open during Spring Break. Students planning to remain oncampus
for all or part of the Spring break must notify their resident assistant at least one week
in advance.
Students may have guests during spring break provided the established guest policies are
followed.
Keys
Upon signing into a resident hall, each resident will be assigned a room key and, in some
halls, an entrance door key. These keys are the student's responsibility until check-out.
Students may not duplicate any residence hall key. For safety and security reasons, the lock
will be changed when a key is lost, and $50.00 will be charged to the resident's account for the
cost of the change. Possession of any unauthorized keys and the giving of keys to
unauthorized persons are matters for serious disciplinary action.
Locks or chains may not be added to any door in the residence halls. Locks may not be
tampered with in any way which may interfere with the locking or unlocking of the door.
Lockouts
Residents are given three lockouts per semester. After the third lockout, a lock change
will be issued for security precautions with a $50 lock change fee being issued to the resident.
Access to Students' Room
Authorized university personnel may enter students' rooms without the resident's
permission for maintenance and housekeeping purposes, fire and safety inspections, inspection
for damage, when residential life personnel have reasonable belief that a violation of a
university policy or municipal, state or federal law is in progress, and for other emergency
purposes.
Following are procedures for entry when there is reasonable belief that a violation is in
progress:
1. The resident assistant (RA) detecting the violation will contact and obtain the assistance
of another staff member to serve as a witness to the incident.
2. The RA will knock on the door in a manner loud enough to be heard and announce
him/herself both by name and title.
3. If there is no response within a reasonable time (30-60 seconds), the RA may use the
master key to enter the room.
4. Once in the room, the RA will observe any violation that may be in progress and describe
the incident on an Incident Report Form.
5. Any materials or equipment being used for an illegal purpose will be confiscated and
turned over to the appropriate supervisor or the official who will transport the material to
the Office of Residential Life.
6. If the student is not present during the entry and any items are removed, a receipt
indicating the RA's name and the item taken will be left in a sealed envelope in a
conspicuous place in the room.
6. The RA will indicate to the occupant(s) (if present) that they will be contacted to
determine any action which will be taken.
Room Inspections
Residential life reserves the right to inspect all residence hall facilities in concern for the
health and safety of resident students. The same applies in concern for the safety,
maintenance, and inventory of university property. Residents will be given at least 24 hours
notice of room inspections. Damage may be assessed if the room is not in its original (checkin)
condition.
Holiday Decorations
There are some realities that must apply in a residence hall in the upholding of safety
standards. Because live Christmas trees burn easily and rapidly, and non-blinking lights, when
in contact with flammable surfaces, cause fires, live Christmas trees are prohibited in the
