PURPOSE STATEMENT<br />

The purpose of the Office of Disability Services is to provide assistance to all<br />

students having physical, visual, hearing, speech, learning, psychological, chronic, and<br />

temporary disabilities.<br />

By providing information, advocacy, and accommodations, the office seeks to<br />

enhance each student’s educational experience by assuming their human, educational, and legal<br />

rights. Thus, through fostering one-on-one relationships with students, Disability Services<br />

strengthens the caring environment of <strong>Barry</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Furthermore, the Office of Disability Services strives to provide a holistic<br />

educational experience, which prepares each student to be united and equal with the nondisabled<br />

population.<br />

POSSIBLE ACCOMMODATIONS*<br />

• Recorded texts and other materials<br />

• Sign language or oral interpreters<br />

• Preferential seating<br />

• Permission to tape record lectures<br />

• Library assistance<br />

• Early registration<br />

• Note takers<br />

• Mobility training and orientation<br />

• Isolated testing room<br />

*Please note that all of the above accommodations are provided at the discretion of<br />

the Director of Disability Services after proper documentation has been submitted to the Office<br />

of Disability Services. Other accommodations are available, and are discussed on an<br />

individual basis.<br />

If you are a student at an off-campus site and require services, please contact a<br />

disability services counselor at 305-899-3489. All paperwork can be taken care of via fax if<br />

necessary.<br />

APPEALS<br />

The student may appeal any decision related to a requested accommodation or<br />

auxiliary aid to the Director of Disability Services. Such an appeal must be made in writing to<br />

the director not later than 10 days following the decision as to a requested accommodation or<br />

aid. Any position paper, brief, medical documentation or other written material, which the<br />

student desires to be reviewed by the Director, shall be submitted together with the notice of<br />

appeal. The Director of Disability Services shall investigate and respond to the notice of<br />

appeal in writing, stating his or her decision, together with the reasons for either affirming or<br />

reversing the previous decision as to an accommodation or auxiliary aid. If a student wishes to<br />

appeal the decision of the director he/she should refer to the policy on Registering a Grievance<br />

Against <strong>University</strong> Employee found later in this publication<br />
