of health insurance coverage, on an annual basis, to health services. If a resident or
international student does not have insurance coverage or they do not provide proof of
insurance coverage, they will be automatically billed for a full year of student health
insurance upon admission to the university.
It is strongly advised that all students be covered under some type of insurance. The
insurance plan that is offered through the university is available to ALL students who are
taking three or more credit hours including those students who are attending classes at distant
site campuses. Insurance benefits are paid in and out of the state of Florida and also covers
students in the study abroad programs.
Student health insurance information may be obtained through the Student Health
PURPOSE STATEMENT
The purpose of the Office of Student Activities is to facilitate individual growth and
development of Barry students through involvement in extra-curricular activities that
compliment the traditional educational process of the University.
In keeping with this objective, the office develops and maintains an extensive extracurricular
program, which provides students with practical opportunities to link classroom
learning with the extra-curricular and pre-professional environment. The office recognizes
over 70 student organizations, promotes Leadership Development, Greek Life, social and
educational programming.
Through increased social interaction, the Office of Student Activities consistently
fosters the development of Barry University’s commitment to quality education through a more
caring environment.
PROGRAMMING
Student Activities is the combined efforts of clubs and organizations established for
and/or by students, including, but not limited to governance, leadership, cultural, social,
diversity, recreational, artistic, political and religious activities. Many of these efforts focus on
programs that serve to educate, develop or entertain the students, faculty, staff, alumni, their
guests and the surrounding community.
The theory of involvement contends that the amount of energy, both physical and
psychological, that students expend at their institution positively affects their development
during college. Students who are involved in campus life also devote considerable time on
campus, participate actively in student organizations and interact frequently with other
students. The Office of Student Activities is one of the vehicles for involving students with the
institution.
Through the Campus Activities Board (CAB), an advisory committee to the Office
of Student Activities designed in 1991 by the students for the students, many programs are
implemented. By utilizing the student’s talents and energies, CAB strives to provide dynamic
and diverse programs that meet the needs and interests of the students at Barry University.
Those programs include evening entertainment such as solo artists, bands, disc jockeys,
comedians, magicians and hypnotists. Talent shows and game shows have also become an
integral part of the programming. Large scale and/or traditional programs include
