7. Avoid dark paths or shortcuts. Walk along lighted paths or sidewalks.<br />

8. Let your roommate know where you are going and when you'll be returning.<br />

9. Report any suspicious activities to your RA and/or public safety.<br />

10. If you are the victim of a crime, report the incident to your RA, Public Safety and/or the<br />

Miami Shores Police Department<br />

The Office of Residential Life also has desk staff members called "rovers". They patrol<br />

the residence hall areas, assist with control of disorderly people and with the removal of<br />

uninvited or otherwise unwanted guests. They carry identification and radios and patrol the<br />

residence hall areas from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am every day.<br />

HURRICANE PROCEDURES<br />

June through November is hurricane season in Florida. To provide for your safety, the<br />

university has developed emergency hurricane procedures. Once a hurricane watch is<br />

announced on the campus by the administration, immediate action will be taken. Your safety<br />

and the safety of others is dependent upon adherence to the following procedures. Each<br />

resident must report to their RA in the designated area of their respective hall. Students who<br />

choose to remain on campus must:<br />

1. Check in with RA and follow directions given.<br />

2. Secure their rooms:<br />

a. close windows and open blinds.<br />

b. place all valuables in locked closets and drawers.<br />

c. remove as much as possible from floor in case of flooding.<br />

3. Go directly to assigned shelter with the following:<br />

a. blanket and pillow<br />

b. personal supplies, including prescription medicines<br />

c. flashlight, games, battery radio, snacks<br />

If evacuation from the residence halls is necessary, the shelters will be the university<br />

library and Thompson Hall. Residents of Sage and Browne will go to Thompson Hall.<br />

Residents of Flood, <strong>Web</strong>er, Mottram-Doss and Dalton-Dunspaugh will go to the library.<br />

Students who choose to remain on-campus must abide by all security precautions and<br />

instructions issued by the vice president of Student Services or his delegate. Resident students<br />

who choose to stay off-campus MUST give their RA the name of the person with whom they<br />

are staying and an address and telephone number where they may be reached. This<br />

information will be communicated only to parents or guardians.<br />
